Jeff Lubsen had wanted to be a psychologist since he was in the fifth grade but situations earlier in his life derailed his passion. When he again decided to proceed with this career path, he knew that his current career would be about making sure that mental healthcare and other healthcare providers are culturally competent and there is no significant disparity in the quality and accessibility of healthcare to minority populations, sexual minorities in particular.

Walden University provided Jeff the opportunity to pursue his M.S. in Mental Health Counseling through a CACREP accredited program with top faculty and research to better advance his own mission of positive social change for the LGBT community.

Jeff started the Affirmative Therapist Guild in Kansas City to better serve sexual minorities. The Guild serves to educate both consumers and providers about what to look for when seeking LGBT affirming healthcare. The purpose of the Guild is to serve as a referral and resource, provide educational materials and educate consumers on LGBT affirming healthcare. The Kansas City chapter has 150 members.

Jeff plans to pursue his doctoral degree so that he can continue changing counseling for the LBGT community.

Resources

For more than 40 years, Walden University has supported working professionals in achieving their academic goals and making a greater impact in their professions and their communities. The Scholars of Change program began in 2009 when Walden University invited students and alumni to help bring the university’s social change mission to life by submitting short videos demonstrating how they were applying their Walden education and experiences to effect positive social change around the globe. The videos demonstrate a learning experience that emphasizes Walden’s scholar-practitioner model, built on the belief that knowledge is most valuable when it is put to use in the interest of the greater good.
