The Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan is the closest outline for a national energy policy that has yet been proposed by the federal government. The comprehensive Plan would reduce carbon pollution from existing power plants—the largest source of global warming in the U.S.—by thirty percent by 2030, from a 2005 baseline. The public comment period for the proposed standard closed on December 1st, and it closed with a bang. 223 companies signed on to support the Plan in a letter to the EPA, the Obama administration, and Senate and House majority and minority leaders.

The letter was coordinated by Ceres, the sustainability advocacy organization, through its Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy project. The companies signing the BICEP letter are also signatories to Ceres’ Climate Declaration, a business-led call to action that urges federal and state policymakers to seize the economic opportunity of addressing climate change. Many of the signatory companies have set their own renewable energy and energy efficiency goals – targets that would be more achievable with enactment of the proposed EPA carbon rule. Signatories range from big brand names—Kellogg’s, Mars, The North Face, Starbucks, SolarCity, Nestlé, IKEA, and Symantec—to smaller businesses such as Blessed Coffee and Rainbow Solutions. These companies see real economic benefits in a comprehensive, planned future for renewable energy.

I’m John Howell for 3BL Media.
