AECOM celebrated its third-annual Safety Week in honor of World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28.

At AECOM, we understand the importance of creating a safe and healthy working environment where employees can return home safely to their family members every day.

This week, AECOM celebrated its third-annual Safety Week in honor of World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28. As part of this effort, AECOM recognizes the employees who help to drive the company’s safety culture, as well as the major safety milestones the company has achieved.

Employees participated in locally hosted safety events and global safety professionals around the world contributed to the AECOM Impact blog’s #SafetyforLife series with safety thought leadership contributions, their career journeys and their views on the importance of safety.

AECOM also hosted a safety video competition where employees submitted one-minute “training” videos to compete for prizes. This year, employees and external stakeholders were invited to vote for the winner. The winning video selected was “Walking is working,” and the runner-up was “Forklift safety.”

“From the significant number of submissions we received for the safety video competition to the daily accounts of employees watching out for their colleagues, AECOM’s Safety Week celebrates the year-long dedication of our global employees to our Safety for Life program and culture of caring,” said Andy Peters, AECOM chief safety officer.

This year, AECOM also achieved a number of safety milestones such as becoming a member of the Campbell Institute, as well as the company’s Chairman and CEO Michael S. Burke being selected for the U.S. National Safety Council’s “CEOs Who ‘Get It’ ” list for his dedication to building a strong culture of safety at AECOM.

Continued Peters, “As we continue to work towards becoming the safety, health and environment leader in our industry, we are constantly looking for new ways to further develop an environmentally friendly, safe and sustainable workplace, while meeting our goal of zero employee injuries and no property damage.”

Compared to the previous fiscal year, AECOM closed its fiscal year 2014 with a 61-percent improvement in its total recordable incident rate (TRIR) — a measure of the frequency of all work-related injuries and illnesses.  Additionally, AECOM reported a 69-percent improvement in its lost-time incident rate (LTIR) over the same time period.

At 0.50, the company’s experience modification rate, a formula derived from the frequency and severity of injuries related to the amount of payroll, is the lowest it has ever been in the company’s history — providing AECOM with an advantage on bidding as the rate surpasses many direct competitors.
