Denver, Colo. – Global technology company Arrow Electronics sponsored a local National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) project last month for third through fifth-grade students at Maxwell Elementary school.

NSBE created SEEK to address the underrepresentation of African-American students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and help the U.S. remain competitive in today's global economy. The SEEK Program succeeds in providing: positive, African-American, collegiate NSBE members as role models; early exposure to math, science and engineering concepts; and group-based learning projects, designed to maximize creativity and ingenuity.

As part of the Arrow-sponsored local NSBE SEEK project, students at SEEK’s Maxwell campus were charged with creating wind turbines capable of generating energy on both large and small scales. Students teamed together to design and build working wind turbine ecosystems out of a simple electronics kit and everyday products; they were encouraged to embrace Arrow’s forward-looking view of technology by thinking Five Years Out in their designs. They also learned about instruments for measuring wind speed and about testing protocols, and they were asked to present their final designs to a panel of expert judges.

Two Arrow engineering interns joined other NSBE members to mentor the students during the three-week project. In addition, several Arrow employees volunteered their time to help coach the mentors, speak to the students about careers in STEM and judge the final presentations.

Zaneta Kelsey, Arrow’s director of IoT marketing, described the NSBE SEEK project as “an incredibly rich experience for students, mentors, parents and companies that creates opportunities at every level. As a sponsor, Arrow takes pride in sharing resources to strengthen the communities we work in and cultivate a diverse pipeline of technology experts.”
