In Spokane, more than 24,000 children are growing up hungry. Area schools have noted that children who are hungry are more likely to be aggressive, hyperactive and exhibit behavior problems that make learning difficult. Building on its philanthropic focus on education and assistance for limited income families, Avista has made the first annual donation of $10,000 to Second Harvest in support of the “Bite 2 Go” program, providing backpacks of food to children each Friday afternoon for consumption over the weekend.

School nutrition programs fill an important gap during the week for children who qualify for free or reduced price lunches. But, the stress of knowing that hunger will strike again over the weekend, stretches the attention limits of many of our kids and distracts them from learning in the classroom.

A Bite 2 Go brings together businesses and organizations to partner with schools and fill the gap so no child goes hungry.
