In its annual survey of U.S. employers, Bloomberg BNA found that 33 percent of responding organizations will require at least some employees to work on Thanksgiving.

  • 97 percent of employers provide Thanksgiving as a paid holiday, with 71 percent offering paid days off for both Thanksgiving and the following Friday.
  • 74 percent of employers requiring Thanksgiving duty will provide extra pay and/or leave, up significantly from 55 percent in 2013.
  • Employees responsible for public safety, security or maintenance are most likely to work on Thanksgiving.
  • Workers at smaller organizations (under 1,000 employees) are most likely to have a four-day holiday weekend.
  • The information in this survey, combined with reporting on the practices of employers in your market, makes a compelling, localized Thanksgiving story.
