Bloomberg was founded on a very basic but critical notion: better access to information creates transparency in global markets which, in turn, brings greater economic opportunity. This idea was both good business and good for society. We continue to live by that ethos today in everything we do. From how we manage our talent pipeline to how we source the paper in our magazines to how we power our offices. That also includes the more than 57,000 hours employees volunteered last year. Our founder Mike Bloomberg often says: “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” That is core to everything we do, including the issuing of our annual impact report, which releases today.

We collect this data (known as Environmental, Social and Governance data) for more than 11,000 companies, enabling our clients to use this critical information in their work. But we don’t just want to talk; we want to lead by example. Disclosing this type of information to the public will hopefully encourage other companies – public and private – to do the same. Because it is good for business and good for society.

For example: our efforts to operate in a more sustainable way have saved us nearly $70 million since 2008 and our emissions efficiency has improved 33%. And the work we do in the communities through our Philanthropy, Diversity & Inclusion and Wellness programs helps us create a culture that attracts the best employees around the globe and gives back to the communities in which we live and work.
