April 22, 2015 /3BL Media/ - On Wednesday, April 15, DIRECTV partnered with C-SPAN to bring the C-SPAN Interactive News Bus to Jordan High School in Watts, CA, which is part of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools network. The high-tech 45-foot bus tours the country sharing the network’s public affairs programming and educational resources with students and teachers.

While on board, Doug Hemming, marketing representative for C-SPAN, gave students an overview of the network’s coverage. “The goal is for students to walk away from the bus with a resource they can use in the classroom and in their daily lives,” he said. After a formal presentation, students tested their knowledge on current events with interactive quizzes.

“We’re thrilled to connect the students of Jordan High School with this unique opportunity from C-SPAN,” said Tina Morefield, director of Corporate Citizenship for DIRECTV. “Many of these students will be of voting age by the next presidential election, so it’s important for them to know how to get informed about key issues.” Jordan High School principal, Carlos Montes, said that his students were “in awe of the C-SPAN bus and excited about the possibility of one day working for such a company.”

Jordan High School is managed by the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, one of the largest school turnaround organizations in the country. DIRECTV has supported the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools since 2007 and provides complimentary television programming, including C-SPAN, through the DIRECTV GOES TO SCHOOL initiative to all 22 schools in the Partnership’s network.

C-SPAN and DIRECTV partnered on a similar event with the interactive news bus at Butler High School in Huntsville, Alabama in Nov. 2014.
