October 28, 2014 /3BL Media/ - Approximately 2,800 new books made their way into the hands of kids from low-income families today thanks to the nonprofit social enterprise First Book and CBS Radio Hartford advertisers.

Through CBS EcoMedia, 700 students at Burns Latino Studies Academy students received brand-new, age-appropriate books. Price Chopper Supermarkets, Harte Auto, Shoppes at Farmington Valley, Columbia Dental, New England Air Museum, Eblens, and Lincoln Technical Institute contributed funding through participation in EcoMedia’s EducationAd program.

A special reading party was held today where the brand-new books were presented to the excited students. Hosts included Greg Harte, Harte Auto Group; Brielle Solinger, Lincoln Tech; Sharon Sperling, Columbia Dental. After opening remarks, CBS Radio talent Jenny Boom Boom of Hot 93.7 and representatives enjoyed reading to the students and helping them with a Halloween-themed classroom activity.

CBS Radio Hartford advertisers’ support is significant in that Burns Latino Studies Academy has a high rate of special education students and the highest rate of English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in the state of Connecticut. Budget constraints limit the school from purchasing new books and the majority of the students come from low-income households without access to books at home.

First Book provides new books and educational resources to children from low-income families. By working with a network of over 140,000 community-based schools and programs, First Book helps elevate the quality of education for kids in need. With help from partners like CBS Radio Hartford advertisers, First Book hopes to reach every one of the nearly 30 million kids that live in low-income households in the United States.

“Books pave the path to a child’s success, in school and in life,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “By putting new these critical educational resources in to the hands of local kids in need, CBS Radio Hartford and CBS Ecomedia are improving lives today and investing in the future of their community.”

“There’s no underestimating the power of books on young impressionable minds,” said Paul Polizzotto, president and founder of CBS EcoMedia. “Over 32 million children in the United States live in poverty, and in their communities there is often a lack of books. We’re grateful to Price Chopper Supermarkets, Harte Auto, Shoppes at Farmington Valley, Columbia Dental, New England Air Museum, Eblens, and Lincoln Technical Institute for coming together to help support First Book’s mission to bring access to new books for children in need.”
