November 27, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Eastman Chemical Company awarded education grants to 19 teachers in seven local school systems through the company's Putting Children First program during an awards ceremony on Monday night. School systems awarded with grants include: Bristol Tennessee City, Hawkins County, Johnson City, Kingsport City, Scott County (VA), Sullivan County and Washington County (TN).

Each of the schools represented received grants of $750 each. The grants are intended to promote innovative classroom programs which improve student learning and performance. Categories include math and science.

A team of judges, consisting of representatives from different school systems, along with an Eastman engineer reviewed the grant applications and selected the recipients. This marks the 22nd year Eastman has awarded the education grants.

Eastman is committed to supporting our local schools,  teachers and students as part of our Putting Children First program, said Paul Montgomery, vice president of Community Relations for Eastman. “We are pleased to assist teachers in finding the resources they need to invest in the students today who will become the work force of tomorrow."

Putting Children First is a partnership between Eastman and eight school systems in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia serving more than 100 schools. Initiated in 1992, the education and business partnership provides the opportunity for educators and business to work together to improve public education, prepare students for the workforce and enhance the community's quality of life.
