The Aspen Institute is sponsoring the 2013 Business and Society International MBA Case Competition for 25 partnering schools. Students will analyze a business case study focused on a real-life business decision being undertaken by a major company to explore the influence that well-managed business can have in society. Competitions at each of the schools will determine first place campus winners, from whom five finalist teams will be chosen. Finalists will present to a panel of corporate judges in New York and participate in a reception hosted by BNY Mellon. All finalist teams will receive prize money and funds to donate to a charity of their choice.

The Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition has issued a ski area report card that ranks 84 resorts in the western U.S. on their environmental practices, ranging from recycling to watershed protection. The study finds a 300 percent increase over the previous year in the number of ski areas that either plan to expand or are in the process of doing so. Nearly one-third of all western ski resorts surveyed were expanding. It also finds that the numbers of skiers have risen by only a fraction of a percentage point annually since 1978. The stagnant skier numbers and a decline in snow associated with climate change have forced one-half of all ski areas on public land to close. Many of those that remain have shifted to a full service lodge model, with hotels, restaurants, shops, and condos that create long-term impacts on wildlife habitat and the region’s water resources. Over half of all alpine ski resorts in the U. S. are on public lands administered by the Forest Service.
