Aurora Organic Dairy has donated more than 28,000 gallons of organic milk and 2,500 pounds of organic butter to hunger relief organizations in 2012, according to company records. The in-kind donations are valued at $100,000 in retail sales. Groups such as Community Food Share in Boulder, the Weld Food Bank in Greeley, and Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver received regular donations from Aurora’s processing plant in Colorado. The company also provides free organic milk and butter to neighbors living near its farms and facilities, and to its 500 employees.

Sappi Fine Paper North America has updated its progress on a five-year plan for sustainability targets that the company began last year. The 2012 Sustainability Report outlines several goals, including scheduling 30,000 hours of education and training for customers; offering training and education for 75 hours per employee annually; increasing the level of certified fiber to 65 percent; reducing energy use by 10 percent; reducing raw material waste by 10 percent; and achieving an annual 12 percent return on net assets. The Report also details Sappi’s outreach programs, such as co-founding the GreenBlue Forest Products Working Group, an organization addressing challenges in the forest products sector.

The Canadian International Development Agency, CIDA, and Barrick Gold Corporation are co-funding a long-term project to fight poverty in northern Peru. CIDA will commit $1million and Barrick is contributing $460,000. The project will work through CARE in three districts located near Barrick’s Lagunas Norte mine, where subsistence farming is the primary means of survival and the average monthly income is $54. The initiative will develop micro-enterprises to service the agriculture industry, focusing on employment opportunities for women and youth, Agrorural, a Peruvian government agency, will also participate in the project.
