Collaboration to Irwin Miller, principal and design director at the Los Angeles office of Gensler, the architecture firm, is getting people out of their comfort zone so they can learn from each other.

Collaboration is the key to finding more sustainable solutions. To reinforce this point, Miller tells a story about a man who unites a village by making soup from a magical stone. “The stone is absolutely irrelevant but it was the tool that brought all of those individuals together.

“Collaboration is really changing the way we approach the design process,” Miller explains. “The way we use technology in the design process is part of what's changing this more collaborative, up-front integrated design approach to projects. And, luckily, the shifts in technology are also aligned with us focusing on sustainability early on in a project.”

Nellie Reid, director of sustainable design at Gensler, adds: “Sustainability is only going to be achieved if we collaborate with other people in the building industry rather than acting alone and designing buildings and then handing off a design to a contractor and specifying materials without having a conversation with manufacturers.”
