The Rosario Automotive Complex in Argentina is the first GM plant in the Americas to receive 50001 certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The ISO 50001 standard acknowledges the latest best international practice in energy management, which is building upon existing national and regional standards to help companies manage their energy usage while finding opportunities to save money and administer improvements.

GM Argentina met these strict standards by training 20 internal auditors for 20 hours to give them a base knowledge of how to implement energy efficiency in the complex. The auditors then trained 70 percent of the complex’s employees on energy efficiency awareness, including contractors and suppliers who consistently work with the plant. Training the majority of the employees led to ISO auditing the processes in all five facilities that make up the industrial complex.

Worldwide, GM has demonstrated their dedication to their goal of reducing energy intensity from its facilities 20 percent by 2020. Rosario joins the following GM global facilities that have earned ISO 50001 certification:

  • Aspern, Austria
  • Eisenach, Germany
  • Gliwice, Poland
  • Rayong, Thailand
  • Zaragoza, Spain

The assembly and stamping facilities at the Rosario complex also earned landfill free status in 2011, which means no waste from daily operations is sent to landfill. Instead, it’s either recycled, reused, or converted into energy.
