Building Reading Corners and providing them with books has become a traditional event for the HMH Orlando volunteers. HMH only began its journey and relationship with the Orlando Magic in 2012 and has already made significant impact - contributing over 8,000 books and assembling Reading Corners for children throughout Central Florida.

On Thursday, October 10, to celebrate children’s literacy and the Orlando Magic’s 25th anniversary as part of HMH Volunteer Week 2013, HMH volunteers joined forces with the Orlando Magic, Florida Blue and the Early Learning Coalition (ELC) to assemble 25 Magic Reading Corners throughout Central Florida.

Magic CEO Alex Martins, Magic Community Ambassadors Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw, Magic player Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Florida Blue Market President Tony Jenkins (Central Florida Region) were among several volunteers showing their volunteer spirit. Together, the groups successfully assembled tables, chairs, hung pictures, laid out Magic reading rugs and shelved 1,875 books donated by HMH. HMH proudly contributed approximately 55 volunteer hours in a single day!

Once all was assembled, children stopped by, picked up our books, and began reading to themselves in a small whisper. There were small voices reciting Five Little Monkeys and words from Curious George.

As we’re dedicated to promoting lifelong learning beyond HMH Volunteer Week, HMH and the Orlando CIC will continue our fight for literacy and our efforts to support our mission of changing people’s lives by fostering passionate, curious learners!
