For the third year, Lockheed Martin is supporting the aerospace and aviation category of the Spirit of Innovation Challenge, sponsored by the Conrad Foundation. The annual Challenge engages high school students to use science, technology, engineering, and math skills to develop commercially viable products and services that address sustainability issues. The Conrad Foundation is a non-profit that combines education, innovation, and entrepreneurship to inspire solutions for global sustainability.

Underwriters Laboratory’s 2012 annual global study, The Product Mindset, shows that sustainable products and operations are becoming more important to manufacturers. 81 percent of those surveyed say sustainability is essential to the success of their business. 89 percent of manufacturers say the same thing about operational sustainability. For the report, researchers interviewed 1,200 manufacturers worldwide from the high technology/consumer electronics, food, smart appliances and building materials sectors about safety, performance, innovation and sustainability.

The Elsevier Foundation has awarded $650,000 in grants to eight institutions for its Libraries in Developing Countries and New Scholars programs. The Libraries initiative supports innovation in improving access to scientific, technical, and medical information. The Scholars program underwrites projects that help women scientists balance family responsibilities with demanding careers.
