As noted in a recent Stanford Social Innovation Review blog, skills-based volunteerism is providing corporations with valuable cultural and business insights.

Medtronic, the global leader in medical technology, is experiencing this firsthand through a pilot of the company's new international employee skilled service program: Skills for Change. Last fall, five Medtronic employees from three countries participated in two India-based research projects designed to improve global health by addressing barriers to healthcare access.

Specifically, Skills for Change participants worked with local nonprofit organizations in Chennai, Tamil Nadu to conduct research on gestational diabetes indicators and diabetic caregiver awareness. The projects are yielding important information that supports Medtronic's broader objectives to accelerate globalization, foster innovation and entrench social responsibility across the corporation.
