COLUMBUS, Neb., Nov. 13, 2013 /3BL Media /PRNewswire/ -- BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX), a leading global medical technology company, and Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) announced today an agreement to purchase renewable energy credits from NextEra Energy Resources' Steele Flats Wind Farm for the next 20 years. Energy from the recently completed 75-megawatt Steele Flats Wind Farm, located between Steele City and Odell, began commercial operation earlier this month, and becomes the latest addition to NPPD's diverse energy portfolio.

Headquartered in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, BD is the first industrial customer to receive the benefit of the output from a wind farm operating in Nebraska. The agreement enables BD to utilize 30 megawatts of generation from the wind farm to offset electricity use from its manufacturing facilities in Columbus and Holdrege, and is an important milestone for the Company's worldwide sustainability program. BD has already met four out of five of its 2015 Sustainability Goals, including a target to source 25 percent of its global electricity use from renewable energy. This agreement will further increase BD's global renewable energy consumption, which is currently 35 percent.

The wind farm was built by NextEra Energy Resources, a Juno Beach, Florida- based company. NPPD will be purchasing all 75 megawatts from the facility through a power purchase agreement, as it has on previous wind farms built and operated by private development companies.

"This opportunity with BD was a unique situation, where an industrial customer of our wholesale customers was seeking the opportunity to meet its sustainability goals," said NPPD President and CEO Pat Pope. "Through many discussions and negotiations we were able to get BD what they were seeking for their Nebraska operations and their sustainability goal, while at the same time adding to our energy portfolio and moving us closer to our Board-established goal for renewable energy."

The Steele Flats facility grew out of efforts during 2012 by NPPD and Omaha Public Power District to solicit wind farm proposals.

"We are very pleased that our collaboration with NPPD is benefiting the community and the environment," said Steve Sichak, Senior Vice President, Integrated Supply Chain, BD. "Our commitment to renewable energy is well aligned with our Company values and it also enhances our operational efficiency."

The Steele Flats Wind Farm, is capable of generating 75 megawatts of electricity from the 44, 1.7- megawatt turbines that have been constructed near Highway 8 in Jefferson and Gage counties. NPPD and Next Era reached a 20-year power purchase agreement in early 2013 to move the project forward.

With the addition of the Steele Flats Wind Farm, coupled with the planned Broken Bow II Wind Farm to be completed by the end of 2014, NPPD will be within 45 megawatts of its Board-directed goal of having 10 percent of its energy resources to come from renewable energy.

NPPD owns the Ainsworth Wind Farm and contracts, through power purchase agreements, with private companies for energy coming from Elkhorn Ridge Wind Farm near Bloomfield, the Crofton Bluffs Wind Energy Facility near Crofton, the Laredo Ridge Wind Farm outside of Petersburg, the Broken Bow Wind Farm west of Broken Bow, and the Springview Wind Energy Facility located outside of Springview.
