St. Paul, MN, July 8, 2013 /3BL Media/ – The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC) welcomes Perfecseal, a leader in the supply of sterilization packaging used for the protection of medical devices, as its newest member. Perfecseal is a division of the Bemis Company and specializes in the manufacture of co-extruded films, laminated films, flexible forming films, foil barrier laminations, pouches, bags, thermoformed trays, lids, labels, heat seal coated DuPont™ Tyvek® and heat seal coated medical grades of paper. “Perfecseal brings a tremendous amount of technical expertise to the table,” says Tod Christenson, Director of HPRC. “Particularly around best practices for separation and recycling of flexible plastic packaging, a significant waste stream for hospitals.”

“Perfecseal is very excited to be a member of the HPRC, says Ed Haedt, Vice President of Marketing at Perfecseal. “Our Medical Device customers supply healthcare facilities with lifesaving products which are protected by our sterilization packaging materials and systems. Healthcare facilities are looking for better recycling and end of life solutions for these packaging materials once the device has been used. Given Perfecseal’s knowledge of the composition of these packaging materials, we feel we can work side by side with the medical device companies and healthcare facilities to find these more sustainable solutions.”

HPRC recently published a how-to guide, called HospiCycle, for hospitals seeking to recycle clean, non-infectious plastic products and packaging waste generated in their facilities. Additional initiatives aimed at enabling recycling of healthcare plastics include, plastic recycling pilot study programs at select healthcare facilities, feasibility and cost analysis of industry transition from paper to plastic labels, and resin testing of the technical limitation in plastics reprocessing.
