SABMiller has published its 2013 Sustainable Development Report online at www.sabmiller.com/sd.

During the past year, SABMiller has:

  • Generated over US$25,042million of economic value, the majority of which was distributed through the course of business to employees, shareholders and other stakeholders;
  • Reduced the water consumption and fossil fuel emissions per hectolitre of lager produced by 8% and 10% respectively  and  reduced absolute water use by 16% and carbon emissions by 26% between 2008 and 2013;
  • Sourced locally over half of the agricultural raw materials for its African division, meeting a year early its target to do so;
  • Invested over US$6 million in programmes to foster entrepreneurial activity around the world;
  • Worked in partnership with governments, NGOs and communities to tackle shared water risk in eight countries through the Water Futures partnership;
  • Operated over 100 programmes around the world to contribute to reducing the harmful use of alcohol, such as drink-driving or underage drinking; and
  • Increased the average group score against its bespoke performance monitoring tool - the Sustainability Assessment Matrix (SAM) - from 3.2 to 3.3 – the sixth year of continual improvement.

More detailed information on SAM, including scores by country and priority, can be found at www.sabmiller.com/sam

SABMiller’s summary report highlights three of the most material sustainable development issues for the business: its economic contribution, the role of beer in society and tackling resource scarcity through the water-food-energy nexus. The report also explains SABMiller’s 10 sustainable development priorities – used to integrate SD into the day to day management of the business – and describes the key initiatives and partnerships underway to address them.

SABMiller plc is one of the world’s leading brewers with more than 200 beer brands and some 70,000 employees in over 75 countries. SABMiller also has growing businesses in soft drinks and is one of the world’s largest bottlers of Coca-Cola products.
