Crews from the Cushing, Okla., Fire Department, Enbridge Energy Co., and Gavilon Pipeline and Storage tested hoses and pumps during the Aug. 27 tank drill, drawing water from terminal ponds that are maintained specifically in the event of a fire. The Aug. 27 exercise was the largest-scale drill the Cushing FD had enacted at any of Cushing’s oil storage facilities.

When you work at one of the largest oil storage facilities in the world, safety is second nature – and No. 1 on the priority list.

At Cushing, Okla., site of the massive storage and supply hub known as the Cushing Terminal, an ounce of prevention is worth multiple pounds of cure.

“Safety standards are extremely important company-wide,” notes Katy Mays, Enbridge’s Emergency Response Coordinator for the Cushing Region. “And we are upholding the Enbridge standard here in Cushing.

“It’s essential to be prepared anywhere, but of course there are so many storage tanks within the Cushing Terminal,” adds Mays. “We’re part of the Safety Alliance of Cushing, which includes the other 13 oil storage companies with facilities in the area. We all participate in a mutual-aid agreement – which means we share equipment whenever it’s needed.

“And as a pipeline company, we are required to do a certain number of drills each year – but we exceed those requirements.”
