For the second year in a row, Special Olympics Michigan athletes battled it out at Chrysler Group’s Chelsea Proving Grounds in the coveted State Cycling Finals on Saturday, September 8. What turned out to be a crisp, colorful fall day, set the scene for more than 170 athletes and a solid support system of coaches, family, friends and Chrysler Group volunteers.

“As always we’re excited and happy to give back to the community,” said Bob Jordan, Head of the Chelsea and Arizona Proving Grounds. “We find it really satisfying to be able to take a facility we normally use for product development and use if for something like this.” This is second consecutive year that the Chelsea Proving Grounds has played host to the State Cycling Finals.  “This venue is perfectly suited for this kind of activity,” added Jordan.

For more than four decades, the Special Olympics has provided children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to train and compete in a wide range of year-round sport competitions totaling more than 440 local and regional activities annually. Cycling is one of a nearly dozen state-level competitions held annually for its athletes with 15 individual and team events using bicycles and tricycles.

Today, all of the athletes were true to the Special Olympics Athlete Oath read before every competition: “Let me win. But, if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Originally recited by Roman gladiators before entering an arena to the biggest battle of their lives, the oath reminds all that they are part of a longstanding tradition with a goal to compete with all of their effort and bravery by pushing to greater heights.
