July 30, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Eastman Chemical Company held a celebratory luncheon July 26 to honor 64 local teachers who completed the Eastman Scholar Mathletes program for the summer of 2013.  These teachers represent 36 schools and seven school systems; Bristol Tennessee City; Hawkins County; Johnson City; Kingsport City; Scott County, Virginia; Sullivan County; and Washington County, Tennessee.

Eastman Scholar Mathletes is a collaborative partnership between Eastman Chemical Company and East Tennessee State University’s Center for Excellence in Math and Science Education. The program provides local elementary and middle school teachers with an opportunity to participate in an intensive two-week summer workshop focused on math education.  A Scholar Mathlete from Bristol Tennessee City Schools commented, “Mathletes taught me different teaching strategies and how to get students to think more for themselves rather than giving them the answers to solve problems. It opened my eyes to reach out to other schools to find out what is working around our region to make all schools in northeast Tennessee better.”

Teachers receive conceptual training, as well as content knowledge training in the workshop.  A Scholar Mathlete from Sullivan County Schools remarked, “Prior to coming to Mathletes, I felt I had the tools and blueprints needed to build a common core classroom but lacked the physical materials and hands-on experiences to be a truly effective common core algebra teacher. Mathletes has given me the building blocks I need to practically and effectively implement the new common core standards in my classroom.”

The workshop also facilitates networking opportunities between teachers from different school systems to spark innovation in the classroom, build upon their own knowledge and develop enhanced teaching strategies. “This program has been a wonderful experience. Through the collaboration with fellow teachers and the information provided, I am confident that my teaching and knowledge of the curriculum has improved,” remarked a Scholar Mathlete from Kingsport City Schools.

The Eastman Scholar Mathletes program was launched in 2007. Since its beginning, the program has produced over 400 graduates.  The program provides participants with teaching methods that move them away from giving students specific steps and answers and moves them toward encouraging students to discover the answers by problem-solving, which is essential in building higher order thinking skills in students.

"Preparing students for the future is a continual goal at Eastman," said Paul Montgomery, Vice President of Community Relations and Corporate Services. "By providing these teachers with new and exciting ways to build interest in math, students will become more engaged and successful in their studies.”
