Tritan Case Study Wins Top Honors in Teaching Materials Competition

Collaboration with Darden School of Business Promotes Eastman Brand

Eastman and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business have been collaborating for a number of years.  Recently, a small group of Eastman management and Darden faculty worked together to develop a case study focusing on the market activation strategy of Eastman Tritan™ copolyesters.  On October 6, 2013, that case study won First Place at The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Case and Materials Competition.

INFORMS is the largest professional society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research, management science and analytics.  The purpose of the annual competition is to encourage the creation, dissemination, and classroom use of new, unpublished cases in operations research and the management sciences.

Much like the Harvard Business Review, Darden Business Publishing offers course materials that educate future executives on understanding analytics and applying crucial business lessons.  As first place winner, the Tritan case study will be included in business school curriculum at top tier business and operations management schools across the United States. Allison Elias, Research Associate at Darden was the lead case writer and leveraged her doctorate in history to tell the story of Tritan, from inception to launch.

Professors Gal Raz and Tim Kraft from Darden School of Business presented the case to all first year MBA students and to second year MBA students taking the Supply Chain Management elective last spring. “By revealing the intricacies of Eastman’s strategy, students are exposed to the company’s innovative and collaborative culture,” stated Raz. “This is an excellent case of determination and strategic thinking.”  

Dr. Emmett Crawford, senior research associate at Eastman is credited as the inventor of Tritan™.  Crawford commented, “As a scientist, it is amazing when you can see something you actually invented appear on a store shelf.  It’s even more incredible when I think of our Tritan journey as curriculum for teaching future business leaders.”

Several Eastman executives involved in launching the Tritan platform were on hand during the first presentation to students.  “This case study is the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance at Eastman.  Our internal teams were pushed to the limits and ultimately stretched the boundaries of risk taking and market activation,” said Dr. Lucian Boldea, vice president and general manager of Advanced Materials – Specialty Plastics.  Tritan™ continues to surpass competitive materials with record market adoption.

Eastman continues working with the Career Management Center at Darden and hopes to leverage this win to promote the Eastman brand and ultimately continue recruiting talented individuals with strong leadership potential.
