CAMPAIGN: A Commitment to Ending Domestic Violence

CONTENT: Blog

This week’s blog post is by Suzanne Bordelon, Mary Kay Independent Consultant, from Blum, Texas. Like many, she never dreamed her family would be touched by domestic violence.

I’d seen The Mary Kay Foundation℠ booths at Seminar and Career Conference each year. But honestly, I always thought cancer research should be a higher priority.

Then, the unthinkable happened about this time last year. My extended family’s world was rocked with the news of domestic violence.  One of my younger cousins was murdered by her husband of more than 20 years. Then, he killed himself, leaving their two teen daughters as orphans.

As I sat through her funeral, my mind kept turning this tragedy over and over. How did this happen? He seemed like a great guy. Their marriage seemed stable.  She was a great mother with a terrific job and volunteered in her community. I always thought this happened to younger, uneducated women in bad relationships. I was so wrong.

My thoughts went back to The Mary Kay Foundation.℠ Days after the funeral, I reached out to the Foundation via email to thank them for the work they do. I really didn't expect a reply. However, I quickly received an email from someone there sending condolences on behalf of the Foundation.  She helped me during this time of grief.

I can't tell you how much it meant to me! She didn't know me, but I felt she shared my grief. That meant the world to me! We all talk about the Mary Kay family and our Mary Kay sisters, and I want everyone to know how true this is!

One year later, I am no closer to understanding this tragedy. But I’m so grateful that The Mary Kay Foundation℠ can be such a lifesaver for me and others who face these tragedies.
