Every year, CSX creates a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report to highlight performance from the past year, set goals, and outline CSX’s vision to be the safest, most progressive North American railroad.

CSX’s 2015 CSR Report reviews the diverse topics that matter most to CSX stakeholders from an environmental, social, and governance perspective. To download the full report, visit www.csx.com/responsibility. Highlights include:

Business Performance & Governance

  • Began reconstruction of the Virginia Avenue Tunnel to increase freight capacity
  • Spent $132 million with more than 250 diverse and minority suppliers
  • Delivered the company’s first sub-70 full-year operating ratio,
  • Generated company-record $2.00 earnings per share

Safety & Security

  • Helped prevent 721 train versus vehicle accidents through the Public Safety Coordination Center
  • Trained and provided resources to train more than 7,000 first responders in rail safety
  • Shared safety messages with more than 237,000 neighbors through Operation Lifesaver


  • Named one of IDG Computerworld’s “100 Best Places to Work in IT” and GI Jobs’ “Top 100 Most Military Friendly Employers”
  • Trained nearly 5,000 employees at CSX’s REDI Center, a state-of-the-art training facility for railroad operations and safety
  • Hired 2,016 employees in 23 states and Canada
  • 55 percent of management hires were people of color

Environment & Efficiency

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2.5 percent since 2011
  • Decreased hazardous waste from ongoing operations by 38.5 percent compared to 2014
  • Received a high score of 100 for climate performance and disclosure from CDP
  • Opened Casky Yard in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, with modern environmental design informed by LEED standards


  • Invested more than $13.5 million in grants and in-kind donations
  • Reached more than 70 percent completion of a company goal to plant 42,000 trees by 2018, planting 3,566 additional trees in 2015
  • Provided 66 transportation moves to help communities
  • Named one of Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s “100 Best Corporate Citizens”
