Global Health Corporate Champions

The Global Health Corporate Champions will bring together 12 professionals from companies across multiple industries for a one-month immersion, service program in Accra, Ghana in June 2016.  The projects will focus on water and sanitation, food security and nutrition, gender equality and empowerment, and health systems strengthening, key public health issues in underserved communities. This diverse group of leaders will leverage their business and operational expertise to improve the effectiveness of local organizations, leaving in place longer term, sustainable capacity. The Global Health Corporate Champions is an activity of the USAID Global Health Fellows Program II, which is implemented by the Public Health Institute and addresses immediate and emerging human capital needs in the global health sphere.

Companies Provide Pro Bono Support to Improve Health in Ghana
They come from companies around the world with two things in common: extensive business and operational experience and a desire to make the world a better, healthier place. Employees from PIMCO, The Dow Chemical Company, and PricewaterhouseCoopers will be among the first Global Health Corporate Champions, embarking on a month long service learning adventure to help improve the quality of public health in Accra, Ghana, in support of the Global Health Fellows Program II (GHFP-II), a USAID program implemented by the Public Health Institute and PYXERA Global.

“Global Pro Bono, also known as International Corporate Volunteerism, is not new. PYXERA Global has worked with a number of companies, including IBM, SAP, Dow, and Medtronic, to implement this kind of practice, but GHFPII has allowed us to open this opportunity to more companies through a multi-company cohort,” said Deirdre White, CEO, PYXERA Global. “In addition, it provides a very practical, tangible way to demonstrate the power of partnership across public, private, and social sectors, even at the individual project level.”

The Global Health Corporate Champions: Expanding the Boundaries of Global Health
“There is a shift taking place in the public health arena to strategically engage the private sector to address global health needs,” said Bridget McHenry, a fellow for Global Health Fellows Program II, serving as organizational development adviser for Office of Population and Reproductive Health in U.S. Agency for International Development’s Global Health Bureau.
