Sustainability Report 2015

At Sappi, we recognize that strong, sustainable companies don't merely manage against quarterly financial targets—they invest in the people they employ, they make commitments to protect the planet from the wasteful use of natural resources and they have a clear vision to achieve profitable growth and prosperity for current and future generations.

Sappi has a demonstrated track record of managing against all three pillars of sustainability, environmental, social and economic responsibility. In 2005 we established one of the first ever sustainability charters in our industry.

We work each and every day at manufacturing, distributing and disposing of our products, from each of our core business units, in responsible and sustainable ways. We are committed to helping all of our partners across the supply chain —from suppliers to customers—understand the true footprint of our business so that they can trust that when they do business with us, they are doing business with the leader in the industry.

Environmental impact is affected not only by the amount of energy,...

Climate change is attributed to deforestation and emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels, among other causes. Biomass is considered carbon neutral when the growth rate of forests is greater than or equal to harvest levels, as is the case in North America. The carbon neutrality of biogenic fuels has been recognized by an abundance of studies and institutions, including the...

The Importance of Supply Chain Traceability in Customer Confidence
Supply chain traceability is a critical element of risk management. At Sappi we record the town and state or province of origin of each load of wood received at our mills. Representative samples of the deliveries to our mills are subsequently traced backward to confirm the accuracy of the information provided. Through a separate effort, the State of Maine requires that all timber harvests must...
