In honor of Earth Day this month, Clorox employees have pledged to adopt new behaviors that save an aggregated 163,000 gallons of water, 5,000 pounds of landfill waste, 28,000 pounds of CO2 and 11,000 kilowatt-hours of energy.

“We are as committed as ever to improving Clorox’s environmental sustainability — not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because it also makes good business sense,” says CEO Benno Dorer. “Employees have played an integral role in this journey to build a culture of sustainability by generating new ideas and driving sustainable workplace initiatives like the Earth Day Pledge.”

Our commitment to environmental sustainability is firmly embedded in our 2020 Strategy

Increase brand investment behind superior value and more targeted 3D innovation Fund growth by reducing waste in our work, products and supply chain

Eco-Goals:

  • Drive sustainability improvements to more than 50% of product portfolio (from 2011 base)
  • Use only recycled or certified virgin fiber in packaging; all palm oil RSPO certified or Green Palm offset

Eco-Goals:

  • Reduce by 20% GHG emissions, energy use, solid waste to landfill and water use (on a per-case-sold basis against 2011 base)
  • Develop 10 zero-waste-to-landfill sites
  • Work with Clorox’s top 100 suppliers (70% spend) to reduce their environmental impact

In addition to the sustainability goals supporting our 2020 Strategy, we have other goals to improve packaging sustainability by 2020. We are aiming to have more than 90% of our products in recyclable primary packaging; to have clear recycling instructions on all packaging; and to eliminate PVC in all packaging.

While there is still much to do, we know that we are heading in the right direction based on the external recognitions we are receiving. In the last three months, Clorox was ranked No. 37 in Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens List.  And, the company received two Climate Leadership Awards for Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. And Clorox will receive the Green to Gold Award, presented by Duquesne University's School of Business Administration for excellence across social, environmental and economic performance indicators.

We have much to be proud of and to celebrate this Earth Day. Today is also a time to reflect on ways that we can personally drive sustainability wins in the coming year in our roles at work.
