Welcome to the first edition of Code Watcher, a weekly newsletter serving up everything you need to know to stay on top of residential building codes, regs, labels, rules and more.

This edition, big news out of the 2018 IECC Code hearings in Louisville, and it’s sobering: The committee recommended efficiency roll backs of the Energy I-Code, with the rallying cry: “We have to take back our code!” Strong words, but you can’t take back what you don’t own. “The IECC is America’s code, and it is the product of local and state officials from across the nation,” says code watcher and EECC head Bill Fay, who filed an investigative report on the hidden machinations of the code hearings. What you read may shock you (spoiler alert: a big step back for efficiency is in the works) ... San Francisco requires new buildings to go from solar-ready to solar operational … silica emerges as "the new asbestos," and, as expected, the recent OSHA Silica Ruling governing its handling was answered with “howling” from the home building industry.

Code Watcher highlight: On our new site, you will see an interactive map that offers state by state code information. Have news from your state? Send it to us at ronjones@codewatcher.us
