Campaign: Community

Supporting local hunger relief programs is a natural fit for us as a neighborhood grocery store. We are proud to collaborate with our customers to be one of the largest contributors to food banks and feeding programs in the communities we serve.

In 2013, Safeway donated an estimated 71,935,464 pounds of food from our stores, plants, distribution centers and other facilities, which is equivalent to 59,946,220 meals* and worth more than $129 million. We work with many local hunger relief organizations to distribute the food where it is needed most.

The Safeway Foundation has supported hunger relief through grants to food banks and similar facilities for many years. The Foundation contributed more than $2 million to hunger relief organizations in 2013.

In 2014, The Foundation announced an exciting partnership with the Entertainment Industry Association to launch the Hunger Is campaign. With one in five children in America going to school hungry every day, we believe childhood hunger is everyone’s issue, and we need to do something about it.
