Our employees lead busy and active lives, but that hasn’t stopped them from giving more than 3 million hours of their time and energy since 2011. Our goal for 2014 is to give back another 1 million hours.

When Kathy Jones isn’t working as a consumer brands supplier services manager at Safeway, you will likely find her at the Lindsay Wildlife Hospital in Walnut Creek, California, rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife. A dedicated volunteer at the hospital for more than 10 years, Kathy has cared for hundreds of small mammals over the years — many of them in her own home — including raccoons, river otters, grey foxes and coyotes.

Her specialty is raccoons, 150 of which Lindsay Wildlife Hospital rescues annually. Kathy is responsible for ensuring raccoons are vaccinated and matched with the best possible caregivers, and she teaches several classes for volunteers about caring for and handling the animals. Kathy also serves on the rescue team, which includes fielding wildlife duress calls from local police when animal control officers are off duty as well as serving as a wildlife first responder during oil spills. Beyond caring for wildlife in her own community, Kathy spent two weeks in Belize last year rescuing parrots.

In 2013, The Safeway Foundation recognized Kathy’s service of more than 1,000 donated hours in that year with a Corporate Gold Volunteer Award, which included a $5,000 donation in her honor to Lindsay Wildlife Hospital.
