Before Ingo Hentschel became vice president of California Field Operations at Cox Communications, he worked as a cable installer, telephone operator and even in supply chain for Cox Communications. But far before that, Ingo honed his leadership skills as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.

After leaving the Marine Corps in December of 1991, Ingo originally planned on working for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, but a hiring freeze was put in place to cut the city’s budget. This is when Ingo began his career journey with Cox as a cable installer.

Ingo was mentored by a Cox Communications employee who was also a former Marine. His mentor helped him transition back into civilian life and learn more about the business side of Cox. Most importantly, his mentor played a vital role in bolstering his confidence and provided encouragement as he shifted careers and adjusted to new aspects of the job – environment, culture and people.

“It’s a struggle to get businesses not to say ‘you don’t know Oracle,’…they lose sight of intangible skills that most veterans just get,” said Ingo about how leaders can help veterans transition into the civilian workplace. “You don’t have to do more with veterans than any other employee you bring on. Provide the same feedback and give direction to get better.”
