DIRECTV Honored by Partnership for Los Angeles Schools

On May 19, DIRECTV was honored with the “Believe” award by the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, one of the largest public school turnaround efforts in the nation, managing 16 of the most challenging Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools and serving 14,000 K-12 students in some of LA's highest-poverty communities. DIRECTV’s recognition acknowledged the organizations’ 8-year history, and was accepted by DIRECTV Chairman, President and CEO Mike White at the Partnership’s annual “Believe with Me” gala in downtown Los Angeles. DIRECTV was one of the first corporate partners to support the Partnership for L.A. Schools. Its support began by underwriting the Parent Centers on campus at the first 10 Partnership schools for the 2007-2008 school year. Since then, DIRECTV has continued that tradition at each campus that has joined the Partnership. DIRECTV has also brought luminaries—including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Herbie Hancock, and Oprah Winfrey—to speak to and inspire students at Partnership high schools. Currently, the DIRECTV Math Challenge is in its third year of inspiring students at all six Partnership elementary schools to love STEM subjects through a contest that recognizes students, parents, teachers and administrators for their role in increasing math proficiency. And the Partnership’s Santee High School recently hosted DIRECTV’s inaugural MATHx event with Teach For America, where hundreds of students, teachers and representatives from STEM-based organizations celebrated the importance of Math education through TED-style talks and interactive demonstrations.
