July 1, 2014 /3BL Media/ - Eastman is pleased to announce that its China Headquarters and Technical Center in Shanghai, China has been awarded LEED® Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable building and construction.

“The new Eastman China Headquarters and Technical Center exemplifies the commitment that Eastman has made to our employees and shareholders to grow and innovate as a global specialty chemical company,” said Dante Rutstrom, vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific. “In addition, the new facility was designed and built to be an environmentally friendly and collaborative work space that demonstrates our commitments to Responsible Care and sustainability.  We are proud to add the USGBC LEED Gold Certification to the achievements that have resulted from this effort.”

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a certification program that recognizes best-in-class sustainable building practices and strategies. To receive LEED certification, building projects must earn points through a rating system based on the prerequisites established by the LEED program. The number of points earned determines the level of certification, ranging from LEED Certified, with a minimum of 40 points, to LEED Platinum for projects earning more than 80 points.

Eastman’s new Shanghai location, which opened in April 2014, achieved gold certification with 71 points. As part of the integration following the acquisition of Solutia, Inc., the office and technical center brought Eastman team members from multiple locations in Shanghai to one China headquarters office.  The move allowed Eastman to make necessary changes to the new location to become a more sustainable working environment.

Elements that contributed to the building’s certification include LED efficient lighting, individual zone controls for heating and cooling, whole building energy management controls, low flow efficient fixtures reducing water usage, and an integrative approach to waste management. In addition, special consideration was given to using low-VOC materials in carpeting, paints and furniture throughout the office space ensuring a high level of air quality for its occupants. As a 2014 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence award recipient, the office has also instituted an ENERGY STAR® policy related to all equipment and appliances.

“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The Eastman China Headquarters and Technical Center project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”
