Walmart is expanding its solar initiative in Arizona. Its distribution center near Phoenix will feature 14,000 solar panels on a one million square-foot building and on parking canopies that will produce up to 30 percent of the center’s energy needs. The sustainability effort at the company’s Buckeye center is the company’s second solar project in Arizona, which ranks third in the U.S. for solar installations.

Buildings in Toronto will be outfitted with 8,800 solar panels in a new program that will produce $16 million dollars for the city over 20 years. Energy produced by the panels will be fed into Toronto Hydro-Electric System’s electrical grid. The new installations will generate 2,600 megawatt hours of electricity annually. 60 percent of the equipment will be made in Ontario.

A recent report projects that by 2013, 33 nations, including the 27 countries of the European Union, and six other regions or “sub-nations” such as California, will have carbon tax or emissions trading schemes. The study, “The Critical Decade: International Action on Climate Change,” also noted that the industrial demand for carbon dioxide as an input into extraction processes is increasing, making the unwanted waste product into a potentially profitable commodity. The study was conducted by the Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
