Kohler’s resident water expert explains his journey from chemical engineer to sustainability marketing manager.

Engineering the Path to Water Conservation

Rob Zimmerman bridges the gap between scientists and consumers. With a degree in chemical engineering and years representing chemical companies, his role as Kohler Co.’s Senior Manager of Sustainability Marketing may seem out of character.

Rob admits this marketing and communications position is the most challenging assignment of his career, but he recognizes its critical significance. He appreciates the importance of not only evaluating the long-term ramifications of the environmental choices Kohler makes, but also turning the sustainable work of Kohler engineers and product developers into a compelling story for consumers.

“We’re doing a big chemistry experiment on our planet, and the predicted outcome is frightening,” Rob cautioned. “My team is researching ways to continue doing what we need to do to meet the needs of society today without ruining our world for future generations. It’s my job to make sure we share the message and encourage others to be more forward thinking.”

The Water Guy

Starting out in new product development 10 years ago, Zimmerman came to Kohler as the “water guy,” having spent several years consulting for large companies on ways to reduce water use. At the time he joined the team, Kohler had a handful of water-efficient products and needed someone with his experience to lead its water-conservation initiative
