July 14, 2015 /3BL Media/ - Freeport-McMoRan recently was honored with the prestigious John S. McCain Leadership Award by the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix for its support of TGen's research into melanoma, the most dangerous and aggressive kind of skin cancer.

Named after U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the annual award recognizes organizations whose leadership and dedication have made a significant impact in the fight against disease and helping patients worldwide.

By looking at a patient's genetic and genomic information combined with medical knowledge from across the world and merging those together, TGen hopes to provide better treatment options to those with the least opportunity to benefit from current treatment options.

Translational genomics research like that being done at TGen is a relatively new field that uses innovative advances from the Human Genome Project and applies them to the development of diagnostics, prognostics and therapies for cancer, neurological disorders, diabetes and other complex diseases.
