It is summertime in the U.K. Apart from the rain, it can only mean one other thing: it’s festival time, and one of the best loved musical events, Glastonbury, becomes the most fabulous place on the planet. It’s not just a weekend of rock and roll. Glastonbury, which began the day after Jimi Hendrix died in 1970, also works hard to make a difference. This year Greenpeace returns to the event with a wake-up call about what’s happening in the Arctic as the Earth’s spectacular air conditioning system is entering a spiral of decline because of our overbearing need for fossil fuels. There will also be WaterAid and Oxfam. And this year, Oxfam wants festival goers to “make a song and dance about poverty and particularly about inequality”, and it will be asking people to sing on the record that they are producing to get world leaders to listen.

One of the amazing facts about Glastonbury is that it also uses technological innovation. A place to see this happen is the Green Fields’ Croissant Neuf stage, one of the longest running stages at the festival, which is powered entirely by natural energy resources. Here you will find the main stage run with less power than a domestic hairdryer! The legendary Croissant Neuf stage uses solar power instead of diesel generators on site to power the stages and lights. They have never used anything but solar and wind generators.
