WASHINGTON, D.C, June 8, 2016 /3BL Media/ - The inaugural Global Health Corporate Champions team—a multi-company cohort comprised of the Dow Chemical Company, PIMCO, and PwC employees—departed this week for Ghana on a four-week pro bono project designed to further strengthen the capacities of organizations striving to  increase access to quality healthcare for communities throughout the country.

“I'm excited to work with colleagues from different industries and learn from their vast corporate experiences that are different from my own,” said participant, Tim Quagliarello, Institutional Account Consultant at PIMCO. “Mostly, I'm excited to experience the culture and make an impact in Ghana.”

This eight-person cross-corporate team—drawing from their collective expertise in management, product sustainability, operations, and finance—will spend the next four weeks embedded in three powerful, social sector health organizations in Ghana.

At the same time, the GHCC Pro Bono Committee—a group of online influencers and social impact advocates in the global health and pro bono space—will amplify this transformative experience on Twitter while and after the team is in-field.  Follow and chime in to the online conversation here at #GHCCGhana

“Working to define the value proposition with our pro bono client as part of #GHCCGhana

Global pro bono programs are known to accelerate difficult-to-cultivate leadership competencies—resiliency, global teaming, and contextual understanding of the business and cultural realities facing emerging markets.

“I’ll be exposed to different approaches to communication and problem solving,” said participant, Darrell Boverhof of Dow, before departing for Accra. “I see this as an opportunity and I’ll need to adapt to ensure my perspectives are conveyed and understood such that progress can be made during the short project timeframe.”

Many businesses are seeing value in contributing to strengthening global health and the communities where they operate.  In the case of the Global Health Corporate Champions, participating companies receive the added benefit of employees who will develop a point-of-view that will inform their careers for a lifetime.

“Working with limited resources and the funding constraints of Ghana’s health sector, I’m not only going to learn more about healthcare challenges outside the US—I’ll gain a different perspective and new approaches to problem solving that I can bring back to my job at PwC,” reflected Aubrey Annan of PwC.

The Global Health Corporate Champions, facilitated by PYXERA Global, is an activity of the USAID Global Health Fellows Program II, which is implemented by the Public Health Institute and addresses immediate and emerging human capital needs in the global health sphere.
