On January 27, 2016 Goldcorp was the proud presenting sponsor of Dress for Success’ Casino Night, an exclusive ladies-only event which took place at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Now in its second year, the event brought together 120 women working in mining and mining–related fields, who collectively raised over $48,000 in support of Vancouver’s Dress for Success. Net proceeds of the event will make it possible for approximately 600 local women to participate in programs that empower women to achieve economic independence by providing professional attire, career services, and skills development programs to help women thrive in work and in life.

Goldcorp’s support for Dress for Success started in 2007. A few years ago, a dedicated group of women at the company asked how funds the company was already donating could create a multiplier effect by helping to raise awareness and getting the mining industry more involved in the cause, and the concept of Casino Nights was born.

In spite of a challenging metals market, this year’s event grew 20% over last year and sold out in under 3 weeks, with Gold level sponsors Novagold and Cassels Brock stepping up to lend their support. Silver sponsors were Silver Wheaton, Newgold, KPMG, Ouest and Dimension Data. Attendees had the chance to win raffle prizes generously donated by the Fairmont Hotels, Wear Else, L’Occitane, Helijet Airways, and Spruce Body labs.

“Looking around the room I see so many fantastic women associated with such a great industry, and united in our support of such a great cause,” said Christine Marks, Goldcorp’s Director of Corporate Communications.  “Women remain one of the most powerful catalysts for economic growth worldwide, so events like these that help get women into the workforce and one step closer toward achieving their dreams are important. It’s great to see the mining industry getting together to contribute to this important cause that makes such a profound difference to women and families in our community.”

"This evening of women in mining coming together for women in the community - we are so grateful for the support!” said Jennifer Halinda, Executive Director of Dress for Success. “Raising awareness of what women struggle with when looking for employment resonates with all of us who have found ourselves looking for work, or someone in our life who has. The funds raised from this event will empower women to feel confident in their skills and abilities to find and keep work while having a support system on the ground," Halinda added.

Since its beginnings in 1997, Dress for Success has established itself in 20 countries and has assisted more than 850,000 women worldwide find jobs.
