Above Ground

Transparency, trust and accountability. These are the guiding principles of Goldcorp’s social policy that underlines our commitment to the communities where we work, our employees, the environment and the protection of basic human rights.

Part of this commitment requires an assurance that the gold we produce has been extracted in a manner that does not cause, support or benefit unlawful armed conflict, or contribute to human rights abuses or breaches of international humanitarian law. Goldcorp takes this responsibility seriously and is proud to release our 2014 Conflict-Free Gold Report. The Report verifies that all gold and gold-bearing material mined by us is in conformance with the World Gold Council’s Conflict-Free Gold Standard.

The Standard was first published in October 2012 as a guide to help companies demonstrate they are operating responsibly, even within conflict zones. Goldcorp implemented the Standard effective January 1, 2013.

In adhering to the Standard, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of all mining operations for the year ended December 31, 2014. This included a risk assessment of all operating areas, a thorough evaluation of corporate obligations and responsibilities - including our commitment to human rights, a review of corporate activities and policies, security measures, payments and benefits-in-kind, as well as processes and procedures for community engagement, complaints and grievances. In addition, a Commodity Assessment was undertaken to ensure we have the proper processes in place to manage the movement of gold and gold-bearing material in our custody, while mitigating the misuse of such materials by groups associated with unlawful armed conflict.

Given their location in “conflict-affected or high-risk” areas, our mines in Mexico and Guatemala (El Sauzal, Los Filos, Peñasquito and Marlin) were the main focus of our implementation of the Standard in 2014.

To provide assurance and build trust among gold buyers, we also produce a Management Statement of Conformance in order to provide a good faith representation to the next participant in the supply chain. In addition, we also engaged the services of Ernst & Young to provide independent limited assurance of Goldcorp’s conformance to the Conflict-Free Gold Standard.

Goldcorp’s 2014 Conflict-Free Gold Report represents a heightened level of due diligence designed to increase confidence and build trust among shareholders, government, local communities, NGOs, supply-chain participants, and others of our unwavering commitment to responsible mining.
