Seattle, WA., November 25, 2014 /3BL Media/ - Green Builder® Media, North America’s leading media company focused on sustainable living, is celebrating the holidays with the Green Your Home for the Holidays sweepstakes. The sweepstakes runs through December 29 and shares information with consumers on ways to create a greener, more sustainable holiday season.  The grand prize winner of the sweepstakes will receive a 4-day, 3-night trip for four to visit the VISION House® in INNOVENTIONS at Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort. The VISION House® in INNOVENTIONS highlights easy and affordable ways visitors can incorporate green products and new technologies in their own homes every day. (See official rules for details).

The VISION House Series from Green Builder Media is a suite of demonstration homes across the country that showcase how to incorporate mainstream green products and systems for everyday sustainable living. The VISION House® in INNOVENTIONS at Epcot allows visitors to take a tour through the exhibit to discover how the fictional family is using green products to remodel their home.

“It is a great time of year to explore ways to be more sustainable; it's easy to be green during the holidays," emphasizes Green Builder Media CEO Sara Gutterman. "There are three areas where you can make a difference: Make sure your house is ready for winter weather (weather-strip around doors and windows and program your thermostat to reduce heating loads at night). Use your creativity to decorate with found objects and local greenery lit with LEDs. Think about giving 'experiential' gifts (such as a cooking class or a museum pass) as opposed to simply buying 'things' for the sake of having something to wrap."

Tips like proper roof maintenance can help you avoid water damage that could effect your home’s insulation, flooring, drywall and in turn make electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems vulnerable. Keep your home energy efficient during the cold months by making sure your windows and doors are weatherized. And don’t forget to test your smoke and CO2 monitors, inspect fire extinguishers and fire sprinkler systems.

In addition to the practical home maintenance that can “green up the holidays”, consumers can also consider smaller steps such as making donations to sustainable or charitable organizations or using LED lighting and timers to cut down on energy usage. In addition, make sure your holiday tree always has enough water and then dispose of it properly so it does not become a fire hazard. Check your local area for tree recycling programs.

It’s important to think about sustainability all year long, not just around the holidays - you can get great ideas on sustainable products by visiting the VISION House in INNOVENTIONS. Included in the exhibit:

  • High efficiency heating and cooling systems and an advanced whole-home automation system by Trane and keyless entry hardware from Schlage
