CIGNA’s Health Disparities Advisory Council is participating in the One Heart, One Life high blood pressure campaign as part of American Heart Month. The Council’s 11 client organizations, with diverse employee populations located throughout the southeastern U.S., will be offered a health promotion toolkit to raise awareness of the serious health implications of high blood pressure. One-third of all Americans are estimated to have hypertension, with more than half not having it under control. Certain populations have a serious health disparity: 40 percent of all African Americans have high blood pressure.

A new study by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research finds that immigrants are filling a healthcare worker shortage. As of 2010, the most recent year for available data, there were 3.4 million U.S. direct care workers, including personal care attendants, nursing assistants, and other similar positions. By 2018, that number is expected to increase to 4.3 million, driven by growing numbers of at-home workers and personal care workers. The report finds that immigrants make up 28 percent of all in-home healthcare workers, and that more than 20 percent of all immigrants employed in direct care are undocumented.
