Google’s Venture Fund plans to invest $1 billion in start-ups over the next five years, with a special focus on biotech. Some of the specific areas of interest include businesses that are working on radical life extension, cryogenics, and nanotechnology. Google Ventures has already invested in Foundation Medicine, a molecular information company that produces a personalized cancer diagnosis so a patient can receive personalized treatment.

BASF has celebrated the 20th anniversary of its ibuprofen plant in Bishop, Texas. The facility uses an environmentally friendly production technique that avoids the use of chromium salts and minimizes waste. It has been recognized with VPP Start site status, which recognizes employers and workers who have implemented effective safety and health management systems. BASF is the leading producer of generic active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The Arnold Foundation is backing the launch of the Nutrition Science Initiative with a $5 million grant. NuSI’s mission is to produce large-scale scientific studies that tackle fundamental issues of obesity, such as how food affects fat, hormones, and the brain. The Arnold Foundation’s seed money will fund in-depth studies by nutrition researchers that are usually prohibitively expensive.
