Two Vermont medical centers, Fletcher Allen and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, are joining up with 13 other Vermont hospitals and health clinics to form a new, accountable care organization, an ACO, called OneCare Vermont. The new association will focus on efficiency and quality in delivering health care. The Affordable Care Act has called for the creation of such ACOs, designed to change the way doctors and hospitals are currently paid, on a fee-for-service basis. ACOs set budget targets to hold down costs while delivering care that meets 33 quality indicators. If the ACO comes in under budget, it gets to share in the savings.

Campbell Soup Company is teaming up with Chef Antonia Lofaso of Bravo’s “Top Chef All-Stars” to help women fight heart disease. Chef Lofaso will lead Campbell’s Address Your Heart Kitchen Project by providing creating ideas for heart-healthy eating and cooking. Visitors to the campaign’s Web site who share their stories about heart health could win a kitchen makeover worth $50,000. Campbell has sponsored the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign for seven years.  Forty-three million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease.

AmeriCares is sending 8,000 doses of flu vaccine to free clinics and community health programs to help fight this year’s flu epidemic. The vaccines were donated by Sanofi Pasteur and will be delivered to 40 clinics, community health centers, and health departments serving the uninsured and underinsured in 10 states, mostly in the West and Midwest where flu cases are rising. Before the flu season ends, AmeriCares will have delivered 82,000 doses of vaccine to 200 health clinics throughout the country. Each year, the AmeriCares Medical Assistance Program provides $20 million in medicines and medical supplies. Last year, two million low-income Americans benefitted from the program.
