The surprise about the top 20 most profitable publicly traded healthcare providers as per as the SEC, is that many of the names on the list are generically named companies you might not recognize. United Surgical Partners International ranked as Number One; this firm’s profit margin jumped from 3.8 percent in 2011 to a whopping 19.2 percent in 2012. Mednax scored as Number Two, with a 13.3 percent margin on sales of $1.8 billion. Psychemedics Corp. claimed Number Three, earning profits of almost 12 percent on revenue of $25 million. And Number Four, the blandly titled Laboratory Corporation of America, reported a margin of 10.3 percent on revenue of $5.67 billion. Some of the bigger companies also scored as among the Top 20 Most Profitable: Quest Diagnostics, HealthSouth, and DaVita Healthcare Partners made the list, as did Universal Health Services, HCA Holdings, and Magellan Health Services. The business models of both the lesser- and well-known of these top 20 most profitable publicly traded healthcare companies should be closely studied for their ability to produce significant profits at a time of confusion and controversy over healthcare costs and revenues. I’m John Howell for 3BL Media.
