NEC Releases Annual Report on Corporate Social Responsibility

NEC Corporation announced today the release of its annual report on corporate social responsibility (CSR) during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2016. NEC has announced its CSR activities aiming to promote sustainable growth and increase corporate value since fiscal 2005.

The report arranges non-financial information regarding environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues for the purpose of disclosing information which corresponds to the needs of medium-to-long term investors. The report also refers to “NEC Corporate Governance Guidelines,” which were adopted to help strengthen the corporate governance system.
 
CSR highlights for the fiscal year 2016 include:

1. Disclosure of non-financial information regarding ESG issues
In recent years, ESG investment that takes into account both financial information and non-financial information is steadily increasing.
 
In order to meet investor expectations, the CSR report 2016 discloses non-financial information regarding ESG issues.
 
This report conforms with the core of the Global Reporting Initiative’s G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, the Ten Principles of the Global Compact advocated by the United Nations, and the ISO 26000 international standard for social responsibility.
 
2. Stakeholder review with the theme of specific social issues
NEC held its fifth stakeholder review since 2011 with NPO and NGO representatives in observation of the ISO 26000. This year, the discussions focused on issues such as the challenges of promoting disaster prevention solutions in collaboration with social sectors and issues related to privacy when providing face recognition technology.
 
3. Adopted  NEC Corporate Governance Guidelines
In June 2016, NEC adopted “NEC Corporate Governance Guidelines” to help strengthen the corporate governance system. NEC addressed the basic framework and policy of NEC’s corporate governance system, relationship with stakeholders, basic policy and structure of information disclosure. Moreover, NEC's activities regarding Japan's "Corporate Governance Code" that entered into force in June 2015 are described.
 
4. Publication of the NEC Annual Report 2016, integrating both financial and non-financial information
NEC issued the NEC Annual Report 2016, which incorporates the opinion of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC). The report introduces a review of the Mid-Term Management Plan 2015 and explains the policies and objectives for the Mid-Term Management Plan 2018. Moreover, it clearly expresses that the seven themes of social value creation that NEC established in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
