WALTHAM, MA., September 24, 2015 /3BL Media/ – National Grid’s innovative First Responder Utility Safety Training website has received the Northeast Gas Association’s annual Safety and Health Award.

Each year, the Northeast Gas Association (NGA) at its executive conference, recognizes a safety or health program developed by an NGA member utility company that has positively impacted the lives of employees, customers, or the general public.

The First Responder Utility Safety Training website is a self-paced, modular e-learning program to train emergency first responders so they can respond safely and effectively to incidents involving natural gas and electricity, including natural gas basics, system infrastructure, gas system operations and proper gas incident response. To date, the site has received about 25,000 page views with an average of 100 visitors per week.

Sue Fleck, Vice President of Gas Pipeline Safety and Compliance, accepted the award on National Grid’s behalf and said, “Fire, police and medical responders often arrive to the scene of an incident or accident before utility personnel can. It is so important for first responders to be able to recognize and respond to dangers posed by damaged electric wires or gas lines, and respond appropriately, for the safety of those involved and the community around them.”

The site was also a recipient of a “Best in Class” interactive media award from the Interactive Media Council.

Last year, National Grid also won the NGA Safety Award for its gas pipeline safety education e-learning program and video learning program “Thinking Beyond the Word ‘Compliance’.”
