The Women’s Council works for the professional advancement of women through education, assistance, support and mentoring. Its scholarship program, now in its eighth year, assists qualified young women and men in their pursuit of education that will lead to careers in the waste and recycling industry. The council will award three scholarships of $5,000 each for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Kathy Trent, Women’s Council scholarship chair and senior public affairs director at Waste Management, said, “A $5,000 scholarship goes a long way to helping young students get closer to their achieving their goals and dreams. The Women’s Council enthusiastically supports aspiring waste and recycling professionals, helping drive growth in our industry by attracting the talent that will drive innovation and advancement in American waste and recycling management for years to come.”

Since its inception, the program has provided more than $100,000 in scholarships to 29 students. All employees of NW&RA member companies, as well as employee spouses or dependents, who are seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees are eligible to apply. The Women’s Council encourages NW&RA member companies to share information about this program with their employees and to donate to the program.

“Our Women’s Council works to promote growth and development of our industry through education and is an important component in the industry’s efforts to encourage young talent to consider careers in waste and recycling. We are proud to offer this scholarship program and prouder still of the support it affords deserving students,” said Sharon H. Kneiss, president and CEO of NW&RA.

The scholarship application deadline is March 13, 2015. Awardees will be featured on NW&RA websites and in materials for WasteExpo 2015, to be held in Las Vegas next June.
